Computing

At St. Gregory’s Catholic Primary School, we inspire our children to become lifelong learners; demonstrating a love for exploration and enquiry. This is achieved through fulfilment of statutory requirements coupled with rich and purposeful learning opportunities.

Computing and technology are an important part of our lives and our future; they are an ever increasing part of day to day life and we aim to ensure that all children are prepared for the technology which our holds. It is vital we educate pupils with knowledge on how best to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. Pupils are entitled to quality hardware and software, as well as a structured and progressive approach to the learning of the skills needed to use it effectively. In order to achieve this, we have carefully-selected the Kapow Computing scheme, and adapted it to the needs of our school.

The three strands of: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy structure our school’s Computing curriculum. Each strand is developed within every Computing unit, through a spiral curriculum approach, where learning is revisited and built upon with increasing levels of complexity. This ensures balanced coverage of all three strands across the subject.

Computing Science:
This strand is the core of our Computing curriculum which provides a crucial foundation to support the learning of the other elements. It equips children with the understanding of how computational systems and algorithms are used to solve problems. Children become skilful programmers who can create and de-bug programmes; thinking logically and critically about digital processes.

Information Technology:

Pupils explore digital artefacts like documents, presentations, spreadsheets, images, audio and video files. By creating their own, they gain confidence as they apply their knowledge across a variety of contexts. Within this strand, pupils also learn how computers are used purposefully, and how this has changed over time.

Digital Literacy:

This strand equips pupils with the skills, knowledge and ability needed to navigate the digital world safely and effectively. Our online safety units help pupils to protect themselves from online risks and teach them how to report concerns. Pupils learn how to search and navigate the internet; evaluating the credibility of the information that they find.
