Writing

At St. Gregory’s, we strive to help our children develop into articulate and imaginative communicators, who are well-equipped with the basic skills they need to become life-long learners; writing fluently is key to this. We aim to ensure all of our children develop a genuine love of language and the written word, through a text-based approach; this links closely to the way that we teach reading, as the text that we use as a stimulus during writing lessons, where possible, is the same text as the one that we read as a class. At St Gregory’s, English lessons are purposeful, challenging and meticulously planned. The study of a text in its entirety is fundamental in order for pupils to be able to deeply analyse how authors develop characters, settings and plots; this allows pupils to develop authorial voices of their own and apply their GPS skills effectively.

We ensure that children develop an understanding of how widely writing is used in everyday life and, therefore, how important and useful the skills are that they are learning. Our intentions in writing are for children to write for a purpose, see themselves as real writers, take ownership of their writing, see writing as an interesting and enjoyable process and acquire the ability to organise and plan their written work with a view of the complete text in mind. We provide opportunities for pupils to write for purpose, such as writing to Local MPs and showcasing their work within and outside of school, including our annual Poetry Slam.

There are carefully-planned opportunities for the English Curriculum to be enriched through off-site educational visits, in-school workshops and author visits. To ensure these enrichment opportunities are of the highest quality and provide variation for the pupils year-by-year, they are planned within the school’s Enrichment Calendar.
